Marriage…
I suppose I’m starting to get old now I guess, by old I’m talking in marriage terms ofcourse. I also suppose being with my girlfriend almost three years would make some people believe it’s about time we got married…
May I ask why? I don’t think nearly enough people question this! It’s almost a case of “hey, we’re 26 and we’ve been going out for a few years. We should get married”. Why? Are you Christian, Catholic? I didn’t think so, why should you get married? Do you truely believe that it will benefit you THAT much?
I believe I’m not the only person who thinks that marriage is a waste of time, aside from one point obviously… legal benefits! Having your partner’s belongings left to you and what not. On top of this obviously is the cost, with an average wedding in the UK being about £11,000 it’s a pricey day! For those of you contemplating it without full though we could always consider divorce rates. In 2003 there were 153,490 divorces in the UK. That’s a hell of a lot, I think some people are making a lot of money out of us east going marriage types.
Personally, I don’t want to get married. Neither does my partner Eleanor! I guess we’re stuffed as far as rights are concerned. What about if we want children? What is the situation as far as a breakup there? Maybe I should just get married for ease!
If you don’t want to get married and have your partner give up their name, if you don’t want to give up YOUR surname, if you don’t want to waste money on a pointless label – what other choice is there?
NOTHING, I wish there was but there isn’t. Apparently laws are in process to give unmarried couples more ‘couple’ rights but I guess one just has to wait and see how effective these rights will be. Will we be able to to inherit our partner’s house if they pass away? Well, I doubt it – but again, time will tell.
I would really like to hear from people who are in the same situation as this. In a relationship without wanting to marry but worrying about what the future holds.
Anybody that has any feelings on this - please get involved and leave a comment.
