Venus ‘Goddess’ Shavers

July 19, 2006 at 8:57 am (Equal Rights)

This advert has been riling me up for a while now! Notice the beautiful, tanned, smooth skin. The stunning good looks. The sheer perfection of these women. They’re goddesses, apparently.

Here I was under the impression that Saraswati and Viishna were goddesses – foolish me. It’s if you shave your legs that you become a goddess! You can achieve the perfection that these women do.

I mean, come on. Do people take this toff seriously? It’s even called ‘Venus’! Let’s all play on the sacred worship of the goddess and yet again turn women into self concious wrecks.

I’ve seen hairy legs on a woman, I didn’t keel over and die. Surely this sort of advertising shouldn’t be allowed!

Matt – signing off!

Lines on men’s faces…

July 18, 2006 at 4:30 pm (Television & Advertising)

Alright, correct me if I’m wrong here…

Hasn’t every man ever deemed attractive or as a sex symbol had lines on their face and around their eyes? I mean, wasn’t Sean Connery voted as a sex symbol a few years ago! George Clooney has lines, every “attractive” man seems to have face lines.

But not anymore! A certain product (can’t remember name right now) has an ad with a man going up an escalator and a woman going down. She checks him out – after all, he is a hot guy. He checks her out and then we see she looks disgusted! Cue the voiceover “Guys, you think those a good eye lines, she thinks you look haggered”.

*gasp*

Hold the phone here missy. Are we just taking a a dig at attractive lines? It appears so – I figured ‘hey, maybe I’m wrong’ so I asked my girlfriend and a few other women. The result all being that lines are attractive, so where the hell did this myth come from?

No, wait – I’ve got it. It’s a stab at making men feel as insecure as women so they can start making as much money off us. If we were as unhappy as women with our appearence then there would be double the money to be made.

This world makes me sick.

“It’s just human nature”

July 18, 2006 at 11:50 am (General Rants!)

Well, I’ve been in discussion most of the morning amongst my workload with a colleague – it’s had it’s high points and low points but seems to turn into banging my head against a brick wall very easily. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the responses which cause such aggravation…

“It’s just human nature” and “Ignorance is the best policy”

Now, this discussion has ranged from religion to vegan-ism. It started off on the wrong foot by me foolishly mentioning “I’m thinking about going Vegan” (I’m currently Vegetarian anyway). This quickly deteriorated in to a slag match until I would drop facts into conversation, and in each of those instances I was met by one of the above stock answers.

I’m not going in to the ins and outs of this particular conversation, I’m purely voicing my annoyance of the general public’s use of stock phrases. I wouldn’t mind being advised otherwise with evidence, but when one has specifically researched a field in which they’re debating – surely the opposition hasn’t a leg to stand on?

It’s almost as bad as “God works in mysterious ways” when you back a Christian into a corner!

Anybody else have these life traumas?
